- 5. Sephiroth (Final Fantasy VII)
Sephiroth’s personality is one of cold ruthlessness. Prior to his madness, he was not particularly anti-social, as he has friends in Crisis Core and willingly tells Zack and Tifa about Mako and Materia on Mt. Nibel. All the same, his cold exterior and professional attitude turn people away. He is very intelligent, and is respectful to those he deems worthy – he considered Professor Gast a great scientist, but looked down on Professor Hojo and described him as “a walking mass of complexes”. Sephiroth is confident to the point of arrogance, but as the strongest SOLDIER alive it could easily be argued he has the right to be. Well-spoken and somewhat graceful, Sephiroth is universally calm, collected and in control. He can be frustrated and caught off his guard, but this rarely happens.
- 4. Terra Branford (Final Fantasy VI)
Terra Branford is the main character in Final Fantasy VI. Her name is Tina in the Japanese version. A half-human, half-Esper, Terra is one of the only humans able to naturally cast magic, and the only human-Esper hybrid in existence. Her unique abilities make her a key player in the war between the Gestahlian Empire and the rebel factions. However, her unique heritage gives her a confused outlook on life, particularly on the subject of love, which she is unsure if she is able to feel.
Terra was born in the Land of Espers, to an Esper father (Maduin) and a human mother (Madeline). Two years after she was born, the Gestahlian Empire raided the Land of Espers and abducted Maduin. Madeline, with her last breath, told the Emperor Gestahl to keep away from her daughter; however, it was too late. Terra grew up in the custody of the Empire, and was bred as a weapon of mass destruction. One of the Empire’s top generals, Kefka Palazzo, took a keen interest in her and put a Slave Crown on her head, so she would follow Kefka’s orders directly. Among them was to annihilate fifty of the Empire’s finest soldiers, which she did with ease.
- 3. Cloud Strife (Final Fantasy VII)
Cloud Strife is the main protagonist in both Final Fantasy VII and Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children. He also appears in the spin-off games Final Fantasy VII: Dirge of Cerberus and Crisis Core -Final Fantasy VII-. In addition, he makes an appearance in Final Fantasy Tactics as a playable character earned through completing a series of side quests.
In Final Fantasy VII, Cloud is somewhat cocky and selfish, agreeing to help AVALANCHE but only for the right price. However, during the events of the game he gradually develops into a better person, and shows genuine concern for the fate of the planet, a sharp contrast to his persona at the start of the game where he claimed he didn’t care. Once his true memories are restored, Cloud largely remains the same in personality, although he is guilty over the events that he allowed to occur as a result of his false memories.
A disgraced knight, Basch has had his name ruined throughout Ivalice, in Final Fantasy XII. Initially, Basch was intended by the developers to be the main character of the game; however, they shifted the focus to Vaan and Penelo late in development after reconsidering the players’ demographics.
Born in the Republic of Landis, Basch has a twin, Noah fon Ronsenburg. Together, they lived peacefully in their homeland. However, Archadia soon moved in and took over Landis. Noah stayed behind, and joined Archadia, but Basch ran away to Dalmasca, hoping they could help restore his homeland.
During the siege of Nalbina Fortress, Basch joined his new Prince, Lord Rasler, into battle. When the odds were against them, Basch suggested a retreat, but Rasler believed they could hold out longer. However, this proved to be a fatal mistake, as an arrow went straight through Rasler’s chest, killing him. Basch took his fallen lord and retreated to Rabanastre.
Basch led the main forces at the counter-attack of Nalbina Fortress, along with long-time friend Vossler. Knowing that the peace treaty was a trap, he tried his best to reach the throne room, leaving some soldiers behind to keep guards off their tail. One of these soldiers was Vaan’s brother, Reks. However, once he reached the room, he realized he was too late, and even worse, there was a trap waiting for him. Knocked out by Archadian soldiers, they got his brother Noah to impersonate him, and trick any survivors, like Reks, into thinking that Basch had killed King Raminas. The plan was successful, as Basch became one of the most hated people in Ivalice, and using this as a pretext, Archadia took control of Dalmasca. Archadia then announced that they had executed Basch. In reality, he was being held prisoner in the Nalbina Dungeon.
Lord Captain Cecil Harvey is the protagonist of Final Fantasy IV. He is one of the few characters in the series that changes his job during the course of the game. He starts out as a Dark Knight, but at a certain point in the game, he transforms into a Paladin.
Final Fantasy IV opens with Cecil commanding a raid on the city of Mysidia in order to steal the Crystal of Water for the king. He succeeds, but he and his crew become suspicious of the king. They wonder whether or not robbing national treasures from innocent people is right. However, Cecil reminds his crew that they are the Red Wings, and must represent Baron at all times. When Cecil returns to the castle, Baigan, the captain of the guards of Baron, notices something strange about Cecil, and takes Cecil to meet the king. Cecil hands over the crystal, and is appalled when the king does not even thank him. As a result, Cecil complains to the king that he and his crew do not understand the reasons for robbing crystals from innocent people. As a result, the king discharges him from the captainship of the Red Wings, and orders him to hunt Summoned Monsters in the Misty Valley, and to deliver a ring known as the Carnelian Signet to the village of Mist. Kain comes to Cecil’s defense, but to no avail, as the king simply orders him to accompany Cecil. That night, Rosa comes to Cecil’s room to show him her sympathy. However, Cecil is upset because he is torn between doing what he believes in and doing what the king orders. He swears that he will never perform another act of evil on behalf of Baron. He also states that despite the fact that he loves Rosa, he knows that they can never be together because of his profession as a Dark Knight.
- 2. Basch fon Ronsenburg (Final Fantasy XII)

Better list. Cecil’s not a bad pick for number 1. Glad to see Basch on there too, for two reasons…one, he was definitely the coolest character in XII (never knew he was the original protagonist…it almost makes more sense that way), and two, Balthier is way overrated so I would’ve been upset to see him on there instead.
I’d complain that somebody was excluded, but I can’t think of any truly egregious omissions. I could actually surprise myself by making a solid argument for Yuna, especially if you think of her across both X and X-2, because she spent 2/3 of X quietly preparing to sacrifice herself for the (temporary) good of Spira, then joined Tidus in destroying the system and overthrowing Yevon, only to lose the guy she had fallen in love with; THEN, rather than letting that sorrow overcome her, she made something of her life by teaming with the Gullwings, which led her into yet another world-altering quest to save Spira from a great evil. How’s that for distinguished heroism?

“I’d complain that somebody was excluded, but I can’t think of any truly egregious omissions”
There is one criminal omission in my opinion.
Celes.
Never since in the franchise has there been such a solid, unpatronizing example of a strong female character.
The problem I have with almost all the female characters in the series is that they all act like they can’t cope in this world without a man to protect them, and you’d be surprised how patronising most women find that.
Tifa is guilty of this, Rinoa is desperately guilty of this, and Yuna is guilty of this. Garnet is to a lesser extent, but it’s not so horribly obvious.
Ashe is the only other exception because she stayed true to the person she loved after he died (right at the start of the game, no less), and because of the bond that builds between her and Basch (there’s an *obvious* unspoken love between the two), which is a much more mature “relationship” than all the teen-angst “love” I’m so tired of seeing in the games.

First…Sephiroth is a hero? There’s no act of heroism from him that seem worthy of being on this list…Second…Tidus isn’t on there?
Tidus is the protagonist in FFX. Even though he found himself lost in a entirely different era, one thousand years from his time, he was still able to be lively. He then joined Yuna in her quest to save Spira. He suffers internal conflicts such as figuring out that he loves his father instead of hating him. But then he had to kill his father. If his father was evil then it would have been a lot easier for him. He loves Yuna but had to protect and escort her so that she can be sacrificed in order to make the final Aeon.
I agree that Cecil is on this list, but I don’t see how he made it to the 1st spot.
