With 2009 just around the corner, fans are already eagerly anticipating some huge titles currently in development.

Square Enix’s Final Fantasy XIII is arguably one of these top titles, not forgetting Resident Evil 5 (Capcom, PS3/Xbox360), Diablo 3 (Blizzard, PC), Duke Nukem Forever (3D Realms, PC), Prince of Persia (Ubisoft, PS3/Xbox360/PC) and the highly anticipated Killzone 2 (Guerrilla Games, PS3).

    Final Fantasy XIII’s Lightning

Last week, Final Fantasy XIII won MTV Germany’s “Do believe the hype” video game award. But is Final Fantasy XIII’s path really that clear cut to the top of the pile as people make it out to be?

Killzone 2 could be Final Fantasy XIII’s biggest rival. The First Person Shooter’s (FPS) fan base is increasing steadily each day with gamers eyes growing on Killzone 2’s attractive graphics and realistic FPS gameplay. The reception this game has had is actually better than Final Fantasy XIII, mostly due to the amount of trailers and information thats been flowing out of Guerrilla Games HQ compared to the quiet giant; Square Enix.

But fans trust towards Square Enix remains strong, cemented by Final Fantasy XIII’s recent “Do believe the hype” award. With its multi-platform release generating more potential sales via PS3 and Xbox 360 owners alike, Square Enix hopes thats enough to edge out single platform competitors such as PS3’s Killzone 2. That however leaves Resident Evil 5.

Capcom’s Resident Evil series has been highly successful, and RE:5 should be no different. Releasing 12th March 2009 in Japan and 13th March 2009 in Europe/North America, this game will be the 2009 front runner given Final Fantasy XIII and Killzone 2 have had no official release date yet. Whether this will out perform Final Fantasy XIII is left to be told, with previous Final Fantasy’s outdoing their antagonist worldwide.

Its highly likely the top 5 games of 2009 will include Final Fantasy XIII, Killzone 2 and Resident Evil 5. With Killzone 2’s apparent lack of advertisment and promotion hurting potential sales, it looks like Resident Evil 5 could pip Killzone 2 on the sales table despite allegations calling the game racist.

Final Fantasy XIII looks like the more likely winner with its large fan base and famous brand. Game of 2009 though? I’ll let you decide.

The fact that anybody could even CONSIDER Resident Evil 5, Prince Of Persia, Diablo 3 or Duke Nukem for a Game Of The Year award is ridiculous (Just as ridiculous as Gears Of War 2 and Fallout 3 getting nominated for GOTY 2008).

What about the ACTUAL big games??? Of course, i’m talking about:

    Gran Turismo 5
    Assasins Creed 2
    Uncharted 2
    Bioshock 2
    White Knight Chronicles
Final Fantasy Versus XIII (MY pick for GOTY 2009, if it does come out next year, that is).

Now i know that some of the games i listed may not make it out next year (The likely candidates being FF Versus XIII and Assasins Creed 2) but let’s just say (Hope) they do.

There’s no doubt in my mind that Final Fantasy will take GOTY in 2009 but from what i’ve seen of both XIII and versus XIII, Final Fantasy Versus XIII can be expected to overshadow it’s “Other half” in every way imaginable.

In my opinion the nominations for GOTY 2009 will be:

    Final Fantasy XIII
    Final Fantasy Versus XIII
    Gran Turismo 5
    Bioshock 2
    Killzone 2

Wait till God of war 3 smokes them all out!!! I tell you the truth–the next generation that we have been promised with the avent of PS3, XBOX 360 and Nintendo Wii begings when you see GOD OF WAR 3 in action (gameplay). And that will some time soon. Between Dec. 08 and Jan 09. Now don’t say I didn’t tell you.

lol who the hell cares about game awards? As long as I enjoy the game it doesn’t matter for me. Of course, recognition would be great for publicity and increase in sales for the companies. But all these game awards are sponsored and you know what means, strings.
