Final Fantasy VII remake horrors
-
A Gamers view:
Many gamers across the world have been craving for a remake of the popular Final Fantasy VII game since the dawn of the PS2. Ideally, being a fan, you just want a graphical and musical update.
Therefore if Square Enix were to recreate the world with stunning visuals, replacing the ingenious score with the orchestral patronage it deserves, many fans would feel they have done a good job.
With the release of the PS3 technical demo recently featuring the opening sequence, it was incorrectly announced by a popular gaming magazine that a remake was confirmed! As a result many fans have had a hopeful fantasy turned into a plausible reality to be considered. However it leaves developers with an unsettling revelation.
In truth Final Fantasy VII is an incredibly, unsettlingly dark game. Surprisingly the majority of the game’s audience doesn’t see this, however apparent it is. One reason for this could be all down to the technical limitations of the Playstation, numbed by cartoonish graphics. Despite this, the story is still extremely twisted with the plot giving an ominous commentary on society’s decay. Most of the scenarios are deeply haunting. Consider Aerith’s death in PS3 graphics. Dyne’s suicide. Or Shin-Ra collapsing the plate on sector seven inhabitants. Cloud beating Aerith. Jenova’s blood bathed trail of entrails in the Shin-Ra headquarters. These are just a few examples of the horrors that exist in Final Fantasy VII.
With the increase in graphical quality, so increases the realism. As a result, Final Fantasy VII would most certainly merit an “M” rating without the contents of the game drastically diluted. Not only would the realistic graphics be problematic, but the dialog as well. A PS3 remake would demand voice acting, which could easily be the downfall of a potential rehash of it’s own right. Filled to the brim with sexual-innuendos and foul language, this is not an obstacle that can be worked around without destroying the game.
I therefore ask myself if Square Enix would produce a Final Fantasy VII remake with the “M” rating? My answer – Highly unlikely. A remake is logistically not possible without significantly watering down it’s harsh, horrific contents, thus ruining the whole game.
One last question therefore remains – Will Square Enix EVER produce a remake of Final Fantasy VII?

for audience type like myself i would love an “M” rated dark horror such as Final Fantasy VII – but will they just make it for myself and not make a big profit from sales? prob not…
it really is a horror to be in square enix’s shoes

I think this will be very cool~! Imagine for the last advent children there aren’t any dusts or dirts on the characters, not to mention the blood when sephiroth stabbed cloud, this time, they’ll add more effects on it, making it looked more realistic. This will ne really awsome and it’ll be on a blu-ray disc. Ready to buy a HD television for it now…

Very good and logical points in this article… I personally don’t think a PS3 VII will come out, and as you said it, it is maybe the darkest FF to be made. But the “cartoony” nature of the game due to hardware limitations sure covered it up.
Considering that Genesis (from Crisis Core) is the man at the secret ending of Dirge of Cerberus, taking Weiss’ body and saying “our time is not over” (not quite remember if this are his exact words), it gives a very strong feeling that the VII compilation has at least one last final chapter to be revealed… This is a loose end, and it should not be left in mystery…
(Hmm… maybe I’ll right an article about this…)

Good article
I’d welcome a remake, with as you said, the original score and characters/settings etc. It may seem like a step back but i think the game would be better with text rather than voice actors, as we all have our own ‘voice’ for cloud, tifa, sephiroth etc in our own heads.
Fingers crossed for a remake!

This article brings up the most valid counter-arguments i have ever seen against a remake of final fantasy VII. How ever, i believe if done correctly this will not be a problem. I agree with the two above poster. I agree they should scrap voice acting. We all have our own voices for the main cast, and in my head, its better then any voice acting i have ever heard for a video game. This, along with a masterfully (fingers crossed) score will not be missed. I also agree that square should just accept a M rating for this game. Yes, this is a dark story. It is a story about victory AND defeat. I believe that square enix should step up as the artists they are and fore-go censorship for a story that has intrigued generations. Make no mistake, even with a M rating, this game is a gaurenteed best seller. Instant classic. People using fake i.d.s and the like.

An M rating seems on the cards now. After all you have Square Enix releasing “The Last Remnant” which will be an M rating.
Im sure you could have the voices, i would personally prefer them even if they did sound a bit strange. The game after all could have the option to remove the voices just like including/removing the subtitles…

Well I really hope so…considering that we had no idea who the mystery character in the secret ending of DoC was…and after playing throuhg CC we figured it was Genesis…that leaves a loose end, cliff hanger whatever…so there has to be something more to it…hopefully. I agree with the grusomeness of making and creating an actual remake…i personally think it would totally kick ass…but i can see the problem in making it a Mature status cuz they have never done that before for FF games….but another complitation games seems more practical….
