FF13 Influenced by identity, terrorism and immigration
-
Despite being only 21 years old, the Final Fantasy Series has seen many transitions from 1987 to now, 2008.
Although each individual instalment has had a different storyline some common elements still transfer to the next title in the series. It’s no lie however that even these elements are susceptible to change and development.
Most people believe the main influences for change is Square Enix’s need for greater realism and deeper storylines. However the outside world plays its part too. Issues such as global warming and war have been transferred into Final Fantasy 7’s “Green Peace” group Avalanche, and Final Fantasy 12’s war torn continent.

Final Fantasy’s latest main title; 13 is no different. The running main theme in 13 is identity. From what we already know, the main antagonist, “Lightning”, will be suffering from some sort of memory loss and in turn she will be trying to discover her own identity, as the player behind the controller is discovering 13’s world. The two main parties on the game, “Pulse” & “Cocoon” too will have their own separate identities.
The problems bigger countries in the World suffer such as terrorism and immigration are also present in Final Fantasy 13’s world. The makers have already confirmed that “the infected”, those with a different identity, will be banished from “Cocoon” and start a new life in “Pulse”. The game apparently also opens up with “Pulse” terrorists committing a form of terrorism in “Cocoon”.
With three major issues already included in Final Fantasy 13, it brings the question what other problems in our world are going to influence Final Fantasy 13, and future Final Fantasy worlds.

I understand the whole identity thing but I believe it can be done without her making her a freakin’ amnesiac. An established character is, perhaps, slightly harder to develop but they’re far more realistic. I don’t think we suffer from memory loss on a daily basis. We’re not goldfish.
It would be more interesting to establish her as a real character with actual, say, emotional baggage and then let her adapt into this world of “terrorism and immigration”. That’s where the real question of identity will come into play. Not trying to fit yourself as a fresh person, but reintegrating yourself depending who you think you are.

Hmm true, but then again, there could be a good reason such as a car crash? lol
Anyway I think this memory loss will mirror a “thiller movie” rather than Clouds bad memory in FF7.
It might turn out pretty good with the player finding out things on the same level with Lightning…
Then again FF13 wont have a main character…

It will be interesting in a way. Thing is, almost every RPG out there seems to be doing it. It’s not a unique thing. There are many ways of introducing an existing world without having a clean slate.
If this were, say, a once-in-a-while mechanic then it makes sense. I understand the “car accident” being a reason but even then it’s rare and seems a little defensive
I expect this to be an amazing game but it’s about time they improved certain things. From FF, I expect atleast that much.

Yeh true, i do get your point of Final Fantasy games often going down the same path. Maybe everyone will catch onto this in the future and Square Enix will be forced to change the direction of the stories…
