Dissidia: Final Fantasy Explained

With Dissidia: Final Fantasy being announced to celebrate the Final Fantasy franchise 20th anniversary, it’s no surprise the story of the game will revolve around the popular crystals from the early Final Fantasy games. Japanese game magazine Famitsu have included a few details from game producer Tetsuya Nomura, director Takeshi Arakawa, and planning director Mitsunori Takahashi mouths.

First on the agenda was the question of why the game is taking so long to finish. The developers answered that the team doing it is pretty young and adjusting was one of the most time-consuming parts of development. They explained they’ve completed 50 percent of the game with character models almost completely sealed.
With the game unlikely to be released soon, Nomura slightly hints Dissidia: Final Fantasy could become avaliable around christmas time commenting it could come at “the time when it’s good to buy games.”

Several stages have so far been confirmed to be in Dissidia Final Fantasy such as Chaos Shrine (I), Pandemonium Palace (II), Clock Tower (VIII), Crystal World (IX) and Braska’s Final Aeon (X). More are said to be in production.

Character numbers total up, the developers say to about 20 right now. They also hinted that a “few small surprises” will give players some nice, nostalgic treats. Balthier and Doctor Cid are rumoured to be additional surprise character representing Final fanatsy 12. However there is still no news on who will fill the heroes space from Final Fantasy VII which has been heavily linked to Cloud or Hancock.

    Confirmed Characters:

    Final Fantasy
    Warrior of Light, Garland

    Final Fantasy II
    Frioniel, Emperor

    Final Fantasy VII
    (Cloud?), Sephiroth

    Final Fantasy VIII
    Squall Leonhart, Ultimecia

    Final Fantasy IX
    Zidane Tribal, Kuja

    Final Fantasy X
    Tidus, Jecht

Gameplay-wise Dissidia is built on a “Brave Points system”. These points are represented by a number at the bottom center of the screen and can be acquired by hitting enemies with special attacks. Once a monster’s brave points hit “break” or zero, your character will gain them and will unleash some heavy “HP Attacks” which will soak up damage commensurate to the opponent’s total health.

The “Brave points system” has been implemented by the developers to allow the possibility of “upsets” in battle.

A bar on the side of the screen is also present called the “EX Bar”. This indicates your character’s capacity to deliver even more powerful blows, boost up their abilities, or undergo transformation to increase their stats.

No doubt this is going to be a great game. Nany people are whispering this could smash Crisis Core sales and become the PSP’s greatest game.

Below is the recent trailer with 2 small translations on the Emperor and Ultimecia:

Emperor: Give up this fantasy of yours, you have no choice but to submit to my rule

Ultimecia: Time! Take these silly children… and scatter their dreams.
